Organic Spirulina (Arthrospiro Plantentis) from the Organic s NZ range, is a single-celled, microscopic, blue-green algae, in the shape of a long thin, spiral coil. The odour and taste is similar to seaweed.
Spirulina is one of natures Superfoods and is predominately grown in alkali water, converting sunlight into energy. First discovered in Lake Texcoco in Mexico, by the Aztecs in the 15th century. They ate it in the form of cakes. Since then, it has been found growing naturally in the lakes of Chad (central Africa), along the Great Rift Valley in East Africa and in the North of Myanmar.
Commercially, Organic Spirulina is grown in large tanks, this ensures it is free from unwanted contaminants and pesticides and ideal growing conditions can be controlled. Spirulina is found growing on or near the equator, as it needs plenty of sunlight and moderate temperatures, 32 – 37c all year round.
According to the United Nations World Health Organisation (WHO) “Spirulina represents an interesting food for multiple reasons, rich in iron and protein, and is able to be administered to children without any risk. WHO considers it a very suitable food”.
