Description

Curcuma longa plant commonly known as Turmeric

Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is a member of the ginger family and is well known for its joint support properties and deep orange colour. The plant has broad leaves and a bulb type root, growing to a maximum height of 1m. These broad leaves and roots contain Curcuminoids, collectively known as curcumin. Scientific studies, have demonstrated curcumin to have strong anti-oxidant properties, which directly benefit the joints and tissues by helping to neutralise free-radicals resulting in joint and muscle relief.

Turmeric has been used as a medicine, spice and colouring agent for thousands of years and has been listed in herbal texts as far back as 600 BC.

Curcumin alone, is poorly absorbed into the bloodstream, but studies have proven, absorption can be substantially enhanced with the addition of Piperine, (Black Pepper) a natural substance.

Benefits

Top 5 Super functions:

Natural Joint Supporter – Inflammation is a part of our bodies immune response and whenever there is inflammation there is pain. But when inflammation becomes out of control like Rheumatoid Arthritis for example, it can damage the body. Turmeric, is a natural joint supporter, assisting joints to work more smoothly and without pain.

Turmeric as a great anti-oxidant – antioxidants are substances that are nutrients as well as enzymes (proteins in your body that assist in chemical reactions). Curcumin has powerful antioxidant effects. It neutralises free radicals on its own, then stimulates the body’s own antioxidant enzymes.

Liver and Digestive health – as a great digestive and liver tonic, Turmeric can help with a range of inflammatory bowel conditions like irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn’s disease and diarrhoea from a stomach bug, due to its anti-inflammatory benefits and anti-microbial properties. Turmeric enhances digestion and can help the liver work more efficiently assisting with the detoxification processes.

Reducing Cholesterol – taken daily, it reduces low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL or “bad”) and triglycerides in overweight people.

Anti-Depressant – depression is caused by an abnormal imbalance in the level of the three neurotransmitters, dopamine, serotonin and norepinephrine. Turmeric blocks the monoamine oxidase enzyme that inactivates these neurotransmitters and increases serotonin and dopamine levels which allows us immediate and lasting happiness. A study in 60 depressed patients showed that curcumin was as effective as Prozac in alleviating the symptoms of depression. https://mentalhealthfood.net/turmeric-the-new-prozac/

Suggested Use/Serving Size

Available in Tablets.

We recommend 4 x 500mg Organics NZ Turmeric with Kampot Black Pepper tablets per day, for adults over 18 years.

When adding turmeric to your diet, here’s some suggestions:

  • The Balinese add fresh turmeric to water, ginger and honey for a refreshing summer drink.
  • It can be added fresh or dried to curries and stir-fries.
  • Mixed with milk and cinnamon for a warming winter beverage.

Adding black pepper increases the absorption of the active constituent curcumin, as does the addition of fat, such as in a coconut curry. The latest craze is adding it to coffee that contains fat in the form of milk, cream or coconut oil to enhance bio availability. There is some sense in this, however, we’re not likely to ever get a clinical trial to confirm it! Whatever the delivery mechanism, it is better to have a daily dose of turmeric than none at all.

FAQ

Is Curcumin the same as Curcuminoids?

Turmeric is the plant name. Curcuminoids are inside the plant. And inside the curcuminoids are called curcumin. So in other words, curcumin is a curcuminoid that’s in Turmeric.
